Australian Labour Force Data: How Representative is the 'Population Represented by the Matched Sample'?.

This paper investigates two related matters. First, what proportion of the population is represent by the matched sample (i.e. by the gross flows data) in the Labour Force Survey, why is this proportion what it is and why does it vary over time? Second, given that slightly over 20% of the population are not represented in the matched sample, how representative are labour market indices derived from the matched sample data and, if biases are present, what is the source and what are the implications of the bias?POPULATION ; LABOUR MARKET ; WORKERS

Reoptimization of the Ohio State University radio telescope for the NASA SETI program

The Ohio State University radiotelescope is the second largest radio telescope in the United States, equivalent in collecting area (2200 sq m) to a 175-foot diameter dish. For the past 17 years it has been dedicated fulltime to SETI, and it is now being considered by NASA for selection as the NASA dedicated SETI observatory. The telescope was originally designed, optimized, and used as an all-sky survey instrument to create detailed maps and catalogs of the radio astronomical sky. For the SETI Program, some re-optimizations are required. Right ascension tracking for one to two hours (depending on the declination) was achieved by exploiting the exceptionally large f/d ratio of the telescope. The feed horns were mounted on a large moveable, rubber-tired cart which is capable of a total motion of 100 feet. The cart can carry many horns, making possible simultaneous observations at many sky directions and frequency ranges. Rapid declination movement and its automation will be accomplished through simplification of the existing braking system, and replacement of older mechanical sensors by modern electronic inclinometers and proximity detectors. Circular polarization capability will be achieved through an increase in the number of horizontal wires in the reflector mesh, or addition of a finer mesh on top of the existing one. The telescope has great inherent resistance to radio frequency interference, due to its ground-mounted feed horns and shielding by the large reflectors of half the horizon. The resistance was recently increased further by installation of rolled-edges and diffraction-trapping gratings on the feed horns. If further shielding should be required, inexpensive side shields could be added to the telescope, making it a totally closed structure on all four sides

Higher Spin BRS Cohomology of Supersymmetric Chiral Matter in D=4

We examine the BRS cohomology of chiral matter in N=1N=1, D=4D=4 supersymmetry to determine a general form of composite superfield operators which can suffer from supersymmetry anomalies. Composite superfield operators \Y_{(a,b)} are products of the elementary chiral superfields SS and \ov S and the derivative operators D_\a, \ov D_{\dot \b} and \pa_{\a \dot \b}. Such superfields \Y_{(a,b)} can be chosen to have `aa' symmetrized undotted indices \a_i and `bb' symmetrized dotted indices \dot \b_j. The result derived here is that each composite superfield \Y_{(a,b)} is subject to potential supersymmetry anomalies if aba-b is an odd number, which means that \Y_{(a,b)} is a fermionic superfield.Comment: 15 pages, CPT-TAMU-20/9

Trends and Cycles in Australian State and Territory Unemployment Rates.

This paper has as its subject matter the behaviour of state unemployment rates over time. Arguments are presented which suggest that the common approach which entails regressing state or regional rate of unemployment on the national rate is not likely to yield much useful knowledge. As a positive contribution to the literature, this paper focuses on two things: first, the behaviour over time in the dispersion of state unemployment rates and their relationship with the business cycle and; second, tests for the presence of common trends and/or common cycles in the state unemployment rates. The results suggest that there is a case which can be made for regional policy in Australia.REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT ; UNEMPLOYMENT ; BUSINESS CYCLES

Okun's Law and Movements over Time in the Unemployment Rate in Australia.

This article explains how movements in the unemployment rate reflect the relative rates of growth of employment and the labour force and are related to the participation rate, labour productivity growth and output growth. A framework is provided in which to analyse the determinants of movements in the unemployment rate. We look at the unemployment rate and its relationship to labour force and employment growth in the next section. In section 3 we define the participation rate and discuss how it relates to labour force growth. Then in Section 4, we consider Verdoon's Law and the relationship between output growth and employment growth. In Section 5 we combine the results in the previous section to determine the relationship between the unemployment rate and output growth. Finally, in Section 6, we summarise the findings. We begin looking at these questions by considering the way in which we measure the unemployment rate.UNEMPLOYMENT ; ECONOMIC THEORY ; MACROECONOMICS
